SPORTS NEWS FOR 1/29/10
NFL NEWS
It’s official Kurt Warner QB for the Arizona Cardinals has just retired after 12 great years in the NFL. Warner was always one of the top professional NFL players on and off the field and spent a lot of his time during the off-season helping out with different charities. During his career Warner won two MVP awards, went to the Pro bowl 5 times and won the Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams early in his career. Even though he had 2 years and $23 million left on his contract, he felt this was the perfect time for him to walk away from the game.
The Cincinnati Bengals rookie LB Rey Maualuga has been arrested for DUI after he hit a parking meter and 2 park cars early this morning. But after learning about this the only thing that has me puzzled since athletes get DUI all the time is why is he still driving a 2003 Pontiac.
This Sunday night is the 2009-10 NFL Pro Bowl that will be held in Miami instead of the usually place Hawaii. Another difference is that this year’s game is the week before the Super Bowl instead of after, which makes all the players in the Super Bowl that made it to the Pro Bowl not eligible. But because the rule states that even if you cant play in the Pro Bowl if you made the team you must make an appearance which has angered many Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints players that have to miss their teams flight in order to fulfill their duties under league rules.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS
The weekend the top seniors in college football will suit up for the North and South and battle it out in this year Senior Bowl. While there is a lot of marquee players in the game the most hyped up player competing is Florida Gators QB Tim Tebow. Tebow won many accolades during his tenure at Florida but many experts predict that he will not make a good QB in the NFL. Many feel he has a better chance as a tight end due to his lack of arm strength that is needed to succeed in the NFL. However Tebow plans on proving people wrong this weekend in front of every NFL scout that thinks he should look at playing another position. Just to make things worst Tebow was diagnosed with streap throat this week and was running a 103-degree temperature on Wednesday.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN NEWS
While in the beginning the match up seemed like Joe-Wilfried Tsonga had a chance but quickly we all realized that he was no match for Roger Federer who cruised to a 6-2,6-3,6-2 win today to advance to the finals. Federer will meet up with Andy Murray in the finals on Sunday.
Once again on the women’s double side the Williams sisters Serena and Venus have won their 4th doubles final at the Australian Open. On top of that Serena is also headed to the singles final against Justine Henin on Saturday.

Is the iPad worth the price tag?
When Apple CEO Steve Jobs raved in early 2009 how the iPad would change the technology world forever people in the technology world started to grow crazy with anticipation. Even before the release people expected the iPad to be the best thing that Apple has ever released, which is a big deal considering Apple has created the iPod, which pretty much everyone in the world currently owns, and the iPhone that transformed the way smartphones are now made.
But just like the iPod, and iPhone, the iPad which will hit the market with a $499 starting price tag got mixed reviews when it was launched early this month. Some people loved the sleek new look and others bashed it for not having most of the features that you could get in a laptop. Hate it or love it just like the previous two devices this is the first generation iPad by the time the third version comes out it will be considered by most the best thing in the world. Even though the critics who hate the iPad have nothing good to say about it, they all agree that the iPad will be the end of the Kindle and any other electronic reader out there.
I have yet to see or use an iPad so I will hold out my opinion of it, but here is what some experts in the field have to say about it.
Quotes on the iPad
Om Malik from tech site GigaOm “ its perfectly made for the consumption of digital media: games, music, photos, videos, magazines, newspapers, and e-books.”
Britain’s Daily Telegraph tech writer Claudine Beaumont “it won’t replace your laptop, but I think it may have sounded the death knell for notebook computers.”
MG Siegler of TechCrunch “ it felt like I was holding the future.”
Nintendo President Saturo Iwata “ it’s a bigger iPod Touch, there were no surprises for me.”
Was Apple the second company to make the iPad?
Back in August a Chinese company by the name of Shenzhen Great Loong Brother Industrial Co developed the “P88” which looks just like the newly launched iPad. The only real difference is the P88 is thicker with a larger screen, more memory, and has USB ports. While many believe Apple were the first ones to come up with the concept, executives for the P88 say that they were first and Apple designed the same thing they all ready did. However many do agree that the iPad is better than the already distributed P88 but it makes you wonder how did two company design two similar products within a short period of time.
For what I can tell I think the iPad would be a good device to have because of it’s light weight which makes it much more easier to carry around then a laptop. You can play games, download music and books right to it which saves you room. The only thing I don’t like about it is the price tag that starts at $499 and if you want 3G high-speed Internet access there is a monthly charge for that. But when its all said and done millions of loyal Apple customers will purchase one as soon as they become available in a couple of months, me probably being one of them.
Movie News! 1/29/10
Movie News! 1/29/10
Check out the best in premium entertainment with Dish Network satellite TV. Dish has a huge variety of intriguing movie channels of every genre and is a reasonable way to spend less money for better entertainment! Here’s the lowdown on the movies scheduled for release today 1/29/10!
1. Edge of Darkness
This film looks like a wild adventurous ride. What’s going on with children being placed in harm’s way in so many of recent movies? First you had Orphan, then The Lovely Bones, now this film where Mel Gibson plays a father whose daughter is murdered and he takes revenge. These stories are heart-wrenching for any parent to watch but somehow the plot surrounding the circumstance is always interesting enough to get us to theaters to watch it. You feel guilty for having been interested in it at all but then again, you know you were at the very least entertained and spent your whole experience at the edge of your seat. This is how I think this movie will be. Most people would watch a decent Mel Gibson flick. Add suspense, danger, revenge and decent directing and you have yourself a winner. I can’t see this movie being bad.
2. When In Rome
This romantic comedy stars Josh Duhamel and Kristen Bell. This movie looks a little cheesy but you can’t go wrong with Hollywood heartthrob Josh Duhamel. Pictures do not do this man justice, in fact, he looks awkward in the pictures I’ve seen of him online but if you see him in on film, you just might just fall in love. Josh was also in the movie A Perfect Getaway along with Milla Jovovich. This was the first movie I’ve seen him in and he gave a great performance. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with his acting though the movie looks a little simple. The story is about a woman looking for love who travels to Rome to find romance and is courted by a group of unlikely men, a reporter in particular. This one would probably make a decent rental.
3. Saint John of Las Vegas
I was wondering what in the world this movie was about because I haven’t heard anything about it until now. I assumed it would be some type of boring and overlooked budget film until I checked it out online and realized that it stars Steve Buscemi. I became more curious. I discovered that the story focuses on a gambling addict who feels the need to cure himself of his addiction and get out of Sin City. He packs up and heads to Alberquerque, New Mexico, starts a new life with a new job but gets sent on assignment to Vegas. Can he keep himself under control, or will he fall back into the game? This drama might be quite interesting and Steve Buscemi rocks. Check it out at the movies or wait for DVD or Dish Net PPV.
4. 44 Inch Chest
Did you say Seven Pounds? Ten-Gallon Head? Love and a .45? Haven’t heard about this film? There might be a reason for that. It’s about a man who gets together with his friends and plans to kidnap his wife’s lover and ultimately carry out his revenge. Starring in the film are John Hurt, Ray Winstone and Tom Wilkinson. I enjoyed Tom Wilkinson’s performance in The Full Monty and many other films but I don’t think I’ll be running to theaters to check out this one. 44 Inch Chest is certainly number 4 on my list.
Rental Recommendation:
The Burning Plain
I watched this movie last night and expected it to be very dull and slow moving. I rented it out of curiosity because I read a good review on it and decided to take the chance. There were few new movies available at the store that truly captured my interest. I always felt that Kim Basinger was an average actress who appears to lack emotional effect in every movie she has been in that I’ve seen and she is in this film. That was a downer for me at first but I figured Charlize Theron’s acting would overcompensate for Basinger’s.
I must say that I was very surprised with Basinger’s performance in The Burning Plain. She must be getting better with time or perhaps she needed a break to get a fresh start on her acting. Whatever she is doing to better her skills, it’s working because I thought she was great. Basinger plays the role of a married woman with three children who is secretly having an affair. Charlize Theron… do I really have to comment on how superb her acting is? I’m sure you can guess. This woman is amazing. She is the complete package. She is beautiful inside and out and her acting is absolutely impeccable. I was thinking back on my favorite actresses last night and was wondering why I never had her on my mental list. There is Kathy Bates, Judy Dench, Cate Blanchett and so on, but not Charlize Theron! I think so many people see how gorgeous she is and forget about the fact that she can out-act almost anyone. Needless to say, the acting was wonderful in this film.
Writer/Director Guillermo Arriaga did a great job telling three stories that would eventually merge into one without leaving the audience confused by alternating back and forth in time without making it obvious. He took the best parts of three different stories showing only the quality events that happen with each one and merged them at the perfect time for the whole thing to come together as one. The story was filled with tragedy but it wasn’t so dark that we couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel and it ended on a positive note. He makes us wonder at the end of the movie what will happen next in the lives of the characters but he also gives us enough closure to fulfill our curiosity.
More Movies written by Guillermo Arriaga:
Amores Perros (2000)
21 Grams (2004)

COLLEGE BASKETBALL NEWS
Joel Branstrom was once a walk on basketball player at the University of Kansas, but since then he has being teaching biology and coaching high school basketball. During the school pep rally students decided to pull a prank by telling him if he could hit a half court shot blind folded he would win tickets to this years March Madness Final Four games. The only thing was there were no tickets it was a joke, which Branstrom learned after he made the amazing shot. Even after he realized it was all a joke he still had a big smile and was happy he could make the kids at the school have a good time. Once the news got out about what happened Branstrom was told he would be getting the tickets for him and his family and all accommodations paid for. Branstrom has not said how he got them but that he was very thankful.
The game between the University of Washington and Seattle University took an unusual turn last night with less then 2 minutes remaining. In a game that never seemed to end Seattle had 6 players foul out of the game leaving only four players to finish the game. Seattle’s coach Cameron Dollar who helped led the 1995 UCLA Bruins to the national championship had one player left he could have played but opted not to because the player Adam Eakles is a red shirt freshman. If he played it would have ruined a year of eligibility in a game that was already a blowout with Washington winning 123-76.

Jolie-Pitt-Aniston
Brad and Angie did not break up according to a source, at least not yet. They were even on a dinner date when the rumor was ignited. The two did however make a trip to the lawyers to decide on how to protect their assets totaling $330 million “just in case” a break up does happen. They aren’t married, but the couple has adopted six children so I’m hoping for the sake of children that everything works out for the best. The kids will have plenty of cash, but will they have the family that Brangelina promised to provide? Imagine the press coverage if they should break up.
I’m sure you’re all wondering whether or not Brad will go back to Jennifer should anything happen. Who knows, but the press has released that Jennifer has just forked up six-figures to pay a celebrity dating service to hook her up with a man that she can trust. What’s going on here? Ask any man you know if he would pass up the opportunity to get to know Jennifer Aniston and most of them would tell you they’d grab the chance. She shouldn’t have to blow her money on a dating service. Not that my advice matters, but maybe she should look for romance outside of Los Angeles and hit on someone instead of waiting for a man to come to her who might just be interested in her money and body rather than who she truly is. Come on girl, you can do it!
Brittany Murphy-Widower Suing Warner Brothers
Brittany’s husband Simon Monjack is planning to sue Warner Brothers for his late wife’s death. The company fired Brittany from her part in the sequel to Happy Feet and Monjack claims that this brought her a huge amount of stress causing a deadly heart attack. What’s wrong with this picture? First Monjack didn’t want an autopsy then, reports disclosed that there was a large amount of prescription medication nearby when Brittany died that was prescribed to her, her mother and her husband. Now the guy is trying to sue Warner Brothers for cash while telling the press that he always paid for everything that he gave to Britany out of his own pocket and that he took care of her when she wasn’t making millions. I don’t know about you guys, but something bizarre seems to be going on here.
Brooke in Rehab?
According to celebritygossip.net, Charlie Sheen’s wife is in rehab in South Carolina for drug and alcohol addiction. She was supposedly ordered to receive treatment after she was recently hospitalized for pneumonia and an infection. Friends were attempting to deliver drugs to her hospital room. Life can’t be too great at the Sheen household when Charlie is arrested for domestic violence and now Brooke is in rehab. One slice of advice for Hollywood superstars- get your ducks in a row before you decide to have kids. Get it together people!
Jason and Molly’s Wedding
Jason Mesnick, last year’s bachelor will be marrying Molly Malaney on television March 8, 2010. As many of us already know, Jason’s first pick for his bride was Melissa Rycroft but he decided at the last minute that he could not live without Molly so he traded in her in. Jason and Molly will be the second couple from The Bachelor to have a nationally televised wedding on ABC. The first couple was Trista Rehn and Ryan Sutter who now have two children. Good luck guys and don’t have any kids until you know things are going to work out. I don’t want to be writing another blog about your children’s family being torn apart for some stupid reason.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL NEWS
On Monday the unbeaten Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team moved into 1st place of the college basketball polls, and on Tuesday they moved out after losing to South Carolina. Even though the rankings will not reset until next Monday Kentucky only lasted a day and a half as the number one team in the country. Kentucky finally showed that they are a really young team when it came down to the wire. South Carolina played a perfect game and got an impressive 30-point performance from 5’9 Devan Downey who was able to create his own shot whenever he wanted. The Wildcats highly touted freshman John Wall who many feels will be the first pick in the NBA draft finished with 19 points in the 68-62 loss.

U.S SOCCER NEWS
Headed into world play this summer the U.S Soccer team was without one of their key players Charlie Davies. Back in October Davies was in an automobile accident that left the driver with minor wounds, another dead and Davies with a broke tibia and femur, fractures to his face which the doctors had to peel his face down to his chin to do surgery on (makes me quiver thinking about that), and a lacerated bladder. Somehow Davies is back training and doing normal drills.

Dish Network and Directv team up against Massachusetts
For Dish Network and Directv to team up and sue a state there has to be a valid reason for two such rivals to actually agree on something. In the State of Massachusetts there are over 270,000 people that subscribe to either Dish Network or Directv, and over 1.9 million that subscribe to cable companies like charter. However only the residents that pay for satellite TV service are charged with a 5% programming tax, me being one of them.
Is there a law against the 5% fee?
Yes there is, The Equal Protection Clauses of the U.S. Constitution says that states such as Massachusetts cannot discriminate against one company that shares a common purpose as another company who provides similar service. But yet somehow only satellite TV subscribers are getting charged the 5% fee, which clearly goes against law.
How did the 5% fee start?
When Dish Network and Directv satellite TV service started there were no 5% charges until cable companies started fearing that they would lose a lot of their customers to satellite companies which offered the same service at a lower price. The cable companies were able to use the fact in Massachusetts Superior Court that they supply TV service to government buildings like schools and libraries to support the local communities, which is why satellite TV companies should have a 5% tax to help the economy also. However they only supply service to government buildings because it is part of their franchise agreements, and it saves them a lot of money not because they are a compassionate company.
Why should both Cable and Satellite companies both be taxed?
Let's face it today’s economy sucks and Dish Network and Directv is not looking for handouts. Both companies fell that if they are taxed so should all the other cable companies especially when the economy is hurting. The below example shows how cable companies are able to use the service they provide to schools and libraries to save millions.
Satellite TV 5% fee Example
Let's say the 272,000 satellite customers have an average bill per month of $50, which generates $680,000 a month and $8,160,000 a year in revenue for the state.
Cable TV 5% fee Example
Now lets say the 1.9 million cable customers have an average bill per month of $50, that will generate $4,750,000 million a month and $57,000,000 million a year in revenue for the state.
Let's be honest do you think that by cable companies supplying schools and libraries in Massachusetts with service is equal to them not paying the 5% fee that satellite TV companies are subject to? . NO IT’S NOT
Let's go with a high number and say there are 10,000 schools and libraries in the state of Massachusetts that receives service from cable companies. Now to be fair lets say that because they are big accounts they would be classified as commercial accounts so their bill would be around $150 a month if they had to pay.
By giving service to schools and libraries it cost cable companies only $75,000 a month and $900,00 a year to supply their service. That saves cable companies $56 million a year in fees that should also be applied to them.
For a state like Massachusetts that likes to hike up toll fees and property taxes and everything else they can, how do they let cable companies get away with this. That $56 million could go toward building stable bridges and help improve the high unemployment rate in Massachusetts.
Satellite Companies are suing the state of Massachusetts because of the unfairness that surrounds the 5% fee that only applies to satellite TV customers and benefits the cable companies. Satellite companies will be the first to admit that cables companies supplying schools and libraries is a good thing, but should they get a $56 million tax break for doing so. Hopefully the lawsuit will make the government drop the 5% fee against current satellite subscribers, or apply the same fee to cable companies and use the money to actually improve the state.
Favorite Movie Couples
There’s nothing like watching a great romantic
comedyor
dramaand falling in love all over again for the first time with your favorite movie couples. It’s essential for the characters in film to be likable and easy to relate to and decent acting usually helps. You can have two great looking actors who are able to perform adequately but they lack the connection needed to make the love story believable.
I was listening to the radio this morning when they were announcing the most liked on-screen couples and asking the listeners which couple they would choose as their favorite. The first couple I thought of, as far as recent movies go, is Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds as they have the competition beat hands down. The Proposal would still be a decent movie without the two actors because the story was good enough to float the boat but I can’t think of anyone (with possibly the exception of Richard Gere and Diane Lane) that would make it half as lovable. You would swear that these two were a real couple and you adore them together so much that when you see them with their significant others in real life, it just doesn’t look right. They’re both gorgeous and mesh so well together that you can’t imagine them with anyone but each other. The connection is what I look for in the best on-screen couple.
I haven’t watched enough movies before the 80’s to really say whom my favorite couple “of all time” would be and it would be unfair of me to guess. At a glance, it seems that Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were a very popular on-screen couple and from the clips I’ve seen had a great connection. Richard Gere and Diane Lane are quite possibly my favorite on-screen couple out of all the films I’ve seen. People in their 30’s and older can certainly relate to the characters that they’ve played on film and their natural good looks are too shabby either. They took my breath away in Nights in Rodanthe as they stole the hearts of audiences everywhere and they broke our hearts in Unfaithful. The two-some was also in the movie The Cotton Club as a stunning couple in the 1930’s. Richard Gere and Diane Lane are another pair that you just can’t imagine being in a relationship with anyone other than each other.
I must mention Gena Rowlands and James Garner in the The Notebook. It was so refreshing to see two older people depicted in a romantic setting. They brought class back to romance and made the audience accept the idea that people can still have flair in their relationships after being together for many years. They had a genuine quality about their relationship and acted like they knew each other forever. These are actors that go beyond what they need to do to make the film work. They take us beyond the surface of the story and they make their way into our hearts reminding us what it really means to care about someone again.
Romance can be included in films of every genre- not just romantic comedies and dramas. Even horror and action films can include great on-screen couples. I’m obsessed with horror movies but I think Twilight is targeted toward the younger generation rather than appealing to a general audience. I never read the book but many people were talking about the new famous on-screen couple. Even though so many people think these two characters have a great connection, I just couldn’t grasp it and maybe I’m getting old but the movie was dull in my book. Yes, I’m in the minority on this one! If I had to pick a pair of actors that made a great on-screen couple in a horror film, I’d have to go with Micah Sloat and Katie Featherstone in Paranormal Activity. The fact that they were your average every day couple conquering a major obstacle together made their relationship believable. They were hired for 500.00 a piece to make this low-budget film that would not have existed if they didn’t deliver a performance that was practically perfect.
Who will the next hottest on-screen couple be? Some upcoming films including dynamic duos are Dear John starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried on February 5th and Remember Me starring Robert Pattinson and Emelie De Ravin on March 12th. Here is the list for the most popular on-screen couples on Hollywood.com. I would only agree from first hand experience on numbers 10, 9, 7, 3 and 2 and I would place them in different order but here goes...

10. Richard Gere and Diane Lane
9. Richard Gere and Julia Roberts

Last night featured a match up of two of the players in the NBA the Cleveland Cavaliers Lebron James and Miami Heats Dwayne Wade. The game lived up to all the hype with Wade scoring 30 points in the first half and Lebron scoring 22. The game continued to be back and fourth throughout the rest of the game with the Heat winning by 1 point with four seconds left. But after James stole the ball from Wade and was going up for a lay up he was fouled and sent to the free throw line where he made both giving his team a one point lead. With the game on the line Wade got the last shot for the win but good defense by James caused Wade to miss shot as time expired for a final score of 92-91.

Well everyone that was hoping to see Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer or Andy Roddick in the finals of the Australian Open will not get to see that happen. Nadal had to pull out of the Open due to a knee injury while playing against Andy Murray. Roddick was able to gut out a shoulder injury but lost to Marin Cilic in five sets. With those two out Federer is obviously the odds on favorite to win the Open event.
