Premium Channel Trivia- DISH

Can you guess the movie showing this weekend on the premium channels with Dish Network Satellite TV? Here are the quotes:

“You measure yourself by the people who measure themselves by you.”

“I envy people who have faith, I just can't get my head around it.”

”Maybe because your head's in the way.”

“I've had baths that were deeper than you.”

“Even now, I can't claim to understand the measure of a life, but I can tell you this: I know that when he died, his eyes were closed and his heart was open, and I'm pretty sure he was happy with his final resting place because he was buried on the mountain, and that was against the law.”

“We live, we die, and the wheels on the bus go round and round.”

“I want my own room.”

”You run hospitals, not health spas. Two beds to a room, no exceptions.”

5 Female Pioneers in Film-HBO Signature

Watch HBO Signature on Satellite TV for movies with powerful women!

Amelia will be premiering in movie theaters tonight. Hilary Swank will star as Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly an airplane over the Atlantic Ocean. This historical moment reminded me of a few women who made their mark in film history. I came up with five female pioneers in film but the list goes on for miles!

Alice Guy-Blache
Alice Guy-Blache was the first female film director. She did her first film titled La Fee aux Choux (The Cabbage Fairy) around 1898 while in charge of production at Gaumont Film Company in France. She went on to direct a total of 324 films of different genres. As early as it was, many of Guy-Blache’s films targeted female audiences and contained feminist ideas. She moved to the U.S. with her husband in 1909 to oversee the production company in Ohio. They would eventually leave Gaumont and form The Solax Company in New York, the largest movie studio in America before the explosion of Hollywood. Guy-Blache was not only a director. She was also a writer and experimented with visual and sound effects- all during a time when women didn’t even have the right to vote!

Penny Marshall
Penny was the first female director to make a movie that earned over $100 million dollars at the box office with Big in 1988. She hit a new record when she did it again with A League of Their Own in 1992.

Reese Witherspoon
Ms. Witherspoon in certainly doing something right. She is the highest paid film actress of all time followed by Angelina Jolie and Cameron Diaz. Reese makes between $15 million and a whopping $20 million per movie! Male actors however are still taking home the bigger paychecks in Hollywood.

Katharine Hepburn
Katharine Hepburn was the most praised actress of all time. Her career was in full force for 49 years. Hepburn broke the mold when she set the record for having the most time between Oscars. She also made history by winning the most Oscars for Best Actress. She was nominated for Best Actress twelve times and took home four Oscars! Meryl Streep came in second with 12 nominations and one win over a 24-year span.

Audrey Munson
Munson was an actress in the silent film Inspiration (1915). She was the first lead actress in film to appear in the nude. Her beautiful figure was an inspiration for over 15 statues in New York. She has obtained such nicknames as American Venus, Miss Manhattan and the Exposition Girl.

Tennis star Caroline Wozniaki’s under investigation

I do agree that professional players that cheat in sports in order to make extra money gambling should be banned for life, however I do not think what Denmark’s Caroline Wozniaki did was wrong. Wozniaki is ranked 6th in the world and is often featured in tennis matches on the Tennis channel and ESPN is under investigation for allegedly fixing her last match.

During her match against home town favorite Anne Kremer at the Luxemburg Open, Wozniaki was on her way to easily winning leading 7-5 5-0 before she pulled her hamstring. The injury caused the match to stop and trainers to work on Wozniaki in order for the match to continue. At that time Wozniaki father who is also her tennis coach came over and asked if she could make it through the match and the rest of the tournament. Right away Wozniaki knew she would not be able to compete in the next round so he suggested that she retire out of the tournament and let Kremer advance to the next round in front of her hometown crowd.

Unfortunately many viewers back in Wozniaki homeland Denmark also heard the advice her father gave her in Danish and quickly hopped online and began placing bets online that she would lose the match which she did by retiring. The event caused many online betting websites to make a big deal out what transpired.

While many others and I agree what she did was a truly honorable thing, the WTA Tennis Integrity Unit does not and launched an investigation into whether or not Wozniaki threw the match. Its obvious she could not go on, even the trainers admitted that it would’ve been hard for her to continue in the tournament without really tearing her hamstring even more.

If the WTA is mad at anybody it should be themselves, they are the ones that required the coaches in this case being Wozniaki father to wear a microphone, which allowed everyone to hear what he said. He did not say what he did to tip off betters; he did it out of concern for his daughter. Had she continued to play and won she would’ve dropped out of her next match anyway and also caused further damage to her leg while trying to finish the match against Kremer.

Should some CEO’s make as much as they do

While watching CNN there was a segment on how much some CEO’s of fortune 500 companies make. When they first showed their base salary I thought that was understandable but then it gave their total earnings with incentives and I could not believe how much money these guys get paid. I was even more shocked to learn a lot of the CEO’s represent some of the companies looking for bail out money from the government.

Now if a CEO does a good job and helps his company stay profitable in this bad economy then that kind of justifies them making millions of dollars, but if they run a major company that’s sinking into the ground, then so should all of his bonuses. It’s not fair that these guys make so much money, then when their companies face a crisis they layoff thousands of hard workers instead of taking a pay cut.

Here is a list of 10 of the top paid CEO’s last year

1. Aubrey K. McClendon – (Chesapeake Energy) base salary of $975,000, total amount made in 2008 $112.5 million
2. Sanja K Cha – (Motorola) base salary of $484,615, total earned in 2008 $104.5 Million
3. Lawrence J Ellison – (Oracle) base salary of $1 million, total earned in 2008 $84.5 million
4. Richard C Adkerson – (Freeport McMoran cooper and gold) base salary of $2.5 Million, total earned in 2008 $72.3 million
5. Bob R Simpson – (XTO energy) base salary of $1.6 million, total earned in 2008 $53.5 million
6. Robert A Iger – (Walt Disney) base salary of $2 million, total earned in 2008 $51.1 million.
7. Lloyd C Blankfien – (Goldman Sachs) base salary $600,000, total earned in 2008 $43 million.
8. Kenneth I Chenault – (American express) base salary of $1.2 million, total earned in 2008 $42.8 million
9. Jon Winklereid – (Goldman Sachs) base salary of $600,000, total earned in 2008 $42.4 million
10. Safra A Catz – (Oracle) base salary of $800,000, total earned in 2008 $42.3 million

I know it takes hard work and determination to become a CEO of one of these companies. Don’t get me wrong I do think these guys should make a lot of money, but if there comes a time for layoffs because of budget cuts. A couple of these CEO’s could afford to sacrifice $50 million dollars out of their yearly bonuses and still be able to pay 1,250 employees a yearly salary of $35,000 and also be able to cover the cost of Health Insurance for each employee.

Amelia has My Attention-5StarMax

For more award-winning dramas, check out 5StarMax in the Cinemax premium movie channel package with Dish Network Satellite TV!

The upcoming movie Amelia is certainly drawing in its share of attention. I originally was not that excited about this drama. I know the acting will be superb but I thought it might be a slower moving movie and slightly uneventful. I saw a much better preview last night and it has now officially grabbed my attention. Amelia looks like a very effective film and there is no way that the acting alone wouldn’t be able to carry the film from start to finish. Seeing Hilary Swank and Richard Gere’s interaction just by watching a quick preview was enough to play on my heartstrings!

Indian film producer and director Mira Nair directed Amelia. She has earned many awards from the Cannes Film Festival, Zee Cine Awards, LA Film Critics Association and more! Nair has directed 13 other successful films including shorts. It’s important to Nair that she brings us into Amelia’s adventures by delivering believable effects as she flies through the air, giving us a feeling of the wind and atmosphere around us. She wanted to also capture the challenge of such a woman having to balance her goals and personal life during this period in history. Nair was so confident in Hilary Swank’s uncanny acting performance as Amelia that she was comfortable including actual footage of Earheart taking flight. This movie is going to capture Amelia Earheart’s accomplishments in history as well as offer us a closer look into her personal life with her husband George Putnam, played by Richard Gere. Nair believes that Amelia serves as a beacon for many American women today considering our present economy and the fact that her historical moment took place in the middle of the Great Depression.

More Movies with Hilary Swank:

Boys Don’t Cry
Million Dollar Baby
Freedom Writers
Insomnia
The Black Dahlia

Kevin Laue happy to be in Manhattan

The College of Manhattan basketball program that usually can be seen on ESPN Full court is hoping for the best in freshman recruit Kevin Laue. Laue who is from Pleasanton California is happy he was able to make his dreams come true by attending a division 1 school on a basketball scholarship. It’s been a rough road for Laue who was not like most 6’11 high school centers that have practically every major college program knocking on their door and sending them recruiting letters just because of their height. He has the skills to play at a major program, but most coaches immediately ruled him out because of one thing.

When Laue was born, he was healthy but due to low prenatal blood circulation his left arm never grew past his elbow. His right arm fully developed but his left arm never has. As a child growing up because of what his parents and most thought was a disability for him, he was often encouraged to play soccer but refused. Laue was interested in basketball and was determined to play the sport he really loved. As a youngster he had problems playing with only one hand and struggled a lot but he never gave up. By the eighth grade he had grown taller and was able to easily palm the ball and dunk with one hand.

Once he reached Amador Valley high School he was able to develop his game even more and as a junior he was the starting center and a force to be reckoned with on the basketball court. While other players he sometimes dominated got attention from big name schools he still received no offers. After breaking his leg he missed his senior year, which at the time was hard for him. For Laue and many other high school athletes trying to earn a full scholarship to any school, your senior year is your last chance to prove your critics wrong.

It seem things might change even after being featured in a 2007 Sports Illustrated article he still had no takers. Instead of giving up he decided to do a prep year at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia. It was there that most mid major coaches saw a kid who really did have potential. Unfortunately he was still only being recruited by a majority of division three schools.

Finally in March of 2009 he received a scholarship offer from division 1 Manhattan College. It was not the same, as going to UNC or Syracuse for basketball but it didn’t matter. After years of hard work and listening to people tell him it’s not possible Laue made his dream come true. He had already left the sunny coastline of California to attend a military academy in order to get were he always new he could be, and finally his chance had arrived.

For all the doubters in his ability to compete against division 1 competition, they will get to see on November 14, when Manhattan takes on N.J.I.T in their first game of the year. It will also be the new beginning of Laue’s journey to become a legitimate division 1 player. He knows its his first year at the college level and does not expect to become an All American over night, but he is expecting to prove his point that don’t matter how much people try to hold you down, hard work and determination can get you anywhere.

Phillies move on to the World Series

Everybody watching TBS last night got to witness the Philadelphia Phillies knock off the L.A Dodgers 10-4 to win the best of seven series 4-1in front of a home crowd of over 46,000. With the win the Phillies advance to the World Series for the second straight year where they will face the winner of the L.A Angels and the New York Yankees who lead the series 3-1 going into tonight’s game.

Last night the Phillies got contribution from just about everybody on the team. The Phillies also did a good job of working the pitch count into their favor all night long, which led to homeruns by Shane Victorino, Pedro Feliz, and Jayson Werth who homered twice. They also received a decent performance from pitcher Cole Hamels who looked a little shaky at times but was able to get through the tough outing thanks to the run support he received from his teammates. Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard took home the NLCS MVP award after a solid performance throughout the series.

For the Dodgers it was a very upsetting loss after coming into the postseason 1st in the NL having won 95 regular season games this year. They swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round and seem to be clicking going into the NLCS match up against the Philadelphia Phillies, but could not keep the hot streak alive throughout the playoffs.

Game one of the World Series will be at either the Yankees or Angels home stadium next Wednesday night. With the Phillies advancing this is shaping up to be a high scoring World Series as all three teams left in the playoffs have done a good job getting base runners into scoring positions, and taking advantage of costly errors. The Phillies are also the first team since the 2001 Yankees to reach the World Series two years in a row.
