133 More Cities Added to offer HD Local Channels by DIRECTV

Satellite TV has announced that is going to be offering 133 more cities local HD channels, now representing more than 91% of  U.S. TV homes. The rollout to these cities will begin sometime late this summer.

New areas that will be included will be Charleston-Huntington, W. Va.; Columbia, S.C.; Huntsville-Decatur, Ala.; Jackson, Miss.; Lexington, Ky.; Roanoke-Lynchburg, Va.; and Shreveport, La. More aunch details to come.

Satellite TV will deliver HD programming from primary networks such as, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC where available and authorized.

As a Satellite TV customer if available in your area you can get your local HD channels by purchasing any CHOICE package or above and pay a $10.00 access fee for the HD. With that HD access fee you will be able to receive HD technology and all channels broadcast in HD that are available  in your particular package.

 

'60 Minutes' Going Hi-Def in Fall

Fans of '60 Minutes' will be happy to hear that CBS says, according to mediabistro.com, the primetime powerhouse will begin broadcasting in High-Definition this September.

The high-def debut for '60 Minutes' will come in September when the news magazine begins its 41st season. '60 Minutes' will be the first network primetime news magazine to broadcast in high-def.

Frank Governale, CBS' vice president of news operations, tells TV Newser that the network plans to produce all CBS News programs in high-def by the end of 2009.  CBS Evening News, anchored by Katie Couric, is expected to switch to HD broadcasts by the end of this month or early July, Governale said.  The executive said the Couric program will include HD field reports from Washington when the switch occurs. In later months, high-def field reports from more cities will be added.

 

ESPN Announces Launch of Official Web Site for New St. Petersburg Bowl

ESPN has launched an official Web site for the newly established St. Petersburg Bowl college football postseason game "StPetersburgBowl.com." ESPN2 will broadcast the 2008 St. Petersburg Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 4:30 p.m. , live from Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. “The St. Petersburg Bowl has been met with great excitement within the community and our Web site is just one more way for us to serve it,” said Chris Turner, Senior Director of Conference Programming, ERT. “In addition, it is a way for fans of both the Big East and C-USA institutions to learn more about the game and what a wonderful destination St. Petersburg is.”
 

ESPN broadcast College World Series in HD

ESPN Networks will provide exclusive coverage of every College World Series game starting Saturday, June 14, which will be ESPN's 29th consecutive year of coverage of the Championship Series. ESPN along with ESPN360.com will provide Fresno State vs. Rice at 2 PM on June 15; while ESPN2 and ESPN360.com will offer LSU vs. North Carolina at 7 PM. ESPN U will broadcast live coverage on Friday, June 13 at 3 PM and Sunday, June 22. ESPN states that ESPN Network will broadcast all 17 games on ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD in high-definition.
 

Travel Channel Launches HD VOD

According to Multichannel News, The Travel Channel has launched a High-Definition VOD service. Travel Channel viewers can access the shows such as Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and Samantha Brown’s Passport through HD VOD. Patrick Younge, president and general manager of Travel Channel said "Since launching our HD simulcast at the beginning of the year, we have made great strides in increasing the distribution for Travel Channel HD, Take up of our standard VOD offering has grown over 130% in the last year, which bodes well for our new HD VOD offer.”
 

BBC America to Launch its HD version this fall

BBC America owned and operated by BBC Worldwide will launch an high-definition channel this fall. This is According to Multichannel News and the publication has not revealed exact date of the launch of the new HD channel by BBC America. Its not clear which are the service provider would carry the new channel. The new HD channel would carry new series Robin Hood, which has aired in high-definition on Satellite TV's channel 101 and also Torchwood.
 

Discovery Communications Planet Green to Launch on June 4

The first 24-hour eco-friendly network from Discovery Communications "Planet Green" to be launched on June 4. Planet Green struck deal with advertisers like General Motors, SC Johnson, Bosch Appliances, Home Depot, Frito Lay, Waste Management, Johnson & Johnson, Dow Chemical, Whirlpool, Clorox and Wachovia Bank. Planet Green’s president and general manager Eileen O’Neill said "We really feel like we have the privilege and opportunity to create a new genre, so we’re not relying on the expectations or the tried and true green programming that’s been out there and has been effective in some of its earnestness and criticalness."

HDNet to Broadcast the Launch of Space Shuttle Discovery Live In HD

HDNet will broadcast live coverage of space shuttle Discovery on Saturday, May 31 at 4:30 PM in high-definition. The coverage will be over by 5:30 PM. HDNet World Report Correspondent Greg Dobbs will host the coverage along with Julie Payette, a veteran of space flight NASA astronaut. Discovery is currently at Launch Pad 39A in preparation for launch on STS-124, a mission to the International Space Station. The mission of the Space Shuttle is to deliver Kibo, the Japan Aerospace ExplorationAgency.
