is there a way to take an eSATA hard drive and after recording stuff onto it take it back and hook it up to a computer? i think that would be pretty awesome cause then you could burn DVDs and what not right?
thats exactly what i want to
thats exactly what i want to do. ive hooked the hdd externally thru the esata port and it works great. now i would like to find out how to transfer these movies/shows etc off the external to my pc. it appears that the receiver partitions the hdd in 3 sections....none which are accessable by my windows based pc. my pc wont even read the drive once hooked up via usb. any help here would be greatly appreciated :)

I understand USB. I have an external hard drive. Can I simply plug it into the USB on my DirectTv Plus HD DVR?
Has anyone added an external
Has anyone added an external drive to the SATA plug? I'd like to add an external but no one has actually said they did it successfully. I'd hate to purchase a Terra bite and not be able to use it.
So, does anyone have an
So, does anyone have an update/information with being able to network these HD receivers (either with another like receiver or PC access) similar to the TiVo boxes? Thanks.
Hello, For the latest Direct
Hello,
For the latest Direct TV HD DVR equipment, can the USB port be used for anything?
Does anyone know how much "disk space" the internal storage is?
Is it a disk? Can another disk be added internally?
Also does anyone know if the External Storage eSATA connection will ever be programmed to use as additional space?
Does anyone know how the "DVR" file is stored. Could it be taken from your external storage and archived on your PC/DVD/CD to watch
again from your DVD player?
I think the new HD DVR with Direct TV is excellent. It changes the whole "Watching TV" experience.
Features are ok, problems
Features are ok, problems sharing content via home network. Devices recognize DVR, but very limited codec support. Have not expanded HDD yet, but plan to. Box is linux based so pretty reliable framework. All around decent product, could benefit from some serious re-design though (remote, menu functions, could learn alot from TiVo).
The DVR is awesome, I do not
The DVR is awesome, I do not care for the remote though. It should be lighted for ease of use in the dark and it should be capable of turning off or on all of my componets without using the AV switch.
Also most of the movies on the Premium channels (HBO etc.)that are on the menu as HD are not true HD, but upscaled which is evident from picture clarity.
direct tv has a large button
direct tv has a large button remote that lights up. If you call customer service they could help you with that.
Whats the SATA connection on
Whats the SATA connection on the back of the HD DVR Plus for? Can I connect an external SATA drive for more capacity?
external Sata hard drive,
external Sata hard drive, yes to increase capacity
It probably has to be an
It probably has to be an eSATA EX-Dard Drive though.
I also like this receiver.
I also like this receiver. It looks so sleek and modern. Plus, HD is the future of television and DVR makes this the one unit to have. HD support up to 1080i is sweet!

Want to increase your HD
Want to increase your HD Capacity - upgrade the hard drive to a 1Terabyte drive, both Seagate and Hitachi offer SATA drives. This will take you to nearly 200 hrs of HD resident in the receiver

I attached a SAT drive to my HD DVR and it does not see it. Is there a process for this or a special drive that has to be used?
Did you get your receiver to
Did you get your receiver to see the new hard drive? If so, what was the process and what drive did you use?

Is the increased capacity drive a replacement of the internal hard drive or is it (like Charter Cable) a USB 2.0 secondary hard drive?

It's not USB... I tried the USB port on the front of the box and it didn't work. There is an eSATA port on the back of the box allows you to upgrade the space. From what I understand... it overrides the internal HD, and 1TB give over 250 hrs of HD content. Newegg had great prices on drives and external cases. My stuff's on order and on the way.... ;o)
I just grabbed a Seagate
I just grabbed a Seagate Free Agent Pro 750 GB eSata drive off the shelf at Best Buy for $161.99 and hooked it up and hit reset and voola it booted up fine and my "List" is at %100 capacity and I'm now recording to it!! No special drive needed. Just be sure it is a eSata and you have the proper cable!
Amazing, I just did this
Amazing, I just did this Saturday. Best buy had the same sale on the same model HDD, all other drives at 750GB were $269 (dropped to $249 the next day) and picked up a eSATA cable.
But all I had to do was plug in the external drive to the eSATA port on the back of the receiver and then restarted it using the menu. When it restarts timers, program guides, recordings, etc... will be gone. As a crude measure at 90% I took a quick look at the programs recorded and had around 15H of HD and 8 of SD.
Also, their price for the eSATA cable was fair, not marked up three-billion percent like their A/V cables.
Sweet. Thanks for the tip.
Sweet. Thanks for the tip. I'm a self-admitted TV junkie, and I can use all hard-drive space I can get for HD TV.
