The Year of the Tiger
In sports there are times when you are lucky to be alive to see an amazing player grow into greatness in front of your eyes. As a child I was never a big fan of Golf, it was just to slow and did not have enough action going on to keep my attention. As I got older I started hearing more and more about a kid named Tiger Woods that played golf at Stanford University. Everyone raved at how amazing he would be back in the mid 90’s, and man did he prove everyone right, as he was just named the greatest athlete of the decade. What is more remarkable is the award comes weeks after Tiger life and career came crashing down.
It’s a shame that an athlete of Tigers caliber would actually put everything he has worked so hard for since the time he was born for some secret affairs with multiple women while trying to keep his perfect family image intact. It’s sad that the only person that could and did stop Tiger from becoming one of the greatest role models in sports history was himself.
It all started with a late night car accident outside if his home in Jupiter, Florida were he was rushed to the hospital after being freed from the car by his wife. When Tiger failed to comment how the accident took place, the media started digging into his personal life, and man he had enough skeletons in his closet to fill a graveyard. All of a sudden the worlds best golfer and most liked athlete in the world had mistresses from all over coming forward giving up information and voice recordings that Tiger left on one’s voicemail.
After a couple of weeks went by and world got to see Tiger in a new light, he finally came forward on his Website about his infidelities and promised he would try to become a better husband and person. He then followed that by later saying he would be taking a leave from golf to try to fix all of his family issues at home.
Fearing the backlash from what just happened to Tigers image some of his sponsors starting pulling out of endorsement deals with him. Even consultant firm Accenture cut ties with him even though he is responsible for making the companies brand a household name. But not all the companies ran for the hills, Nike and Upper Deck have agreed to stand by him while others are still deciding his fate.
With all the trouble surrounding Tiger, it must have been difficult for members of the Associated Press to do the right thing and name Tiger Woods the best athlete of the decade. If the award was for the greatest role model of the decade given his current circumstances he would of not even placed in the top 100. His personal life has no meaning on the award, it’s all about what he accomplished on the golf course and what he did was simply amazing.
Out of his 13 years on the PGA tour Woods has shattered and broken many of golf’s records in his brief career and only remains four wins behind the legendary Jack Nicklaus in all time major wins in PGA history.
If you look at what Tiger did in his sport it’s hard to argue that he is undeserving of the award. He has amassed 56 wins in this decade alone, which is about one in every three tournaments he enters. If that was not enough he has held the 1st place ranking the whole entire decade except for 32 weeks. To put it clear Tiger Woods became sports first billionaire, something that not even basketballs great Michael Jordan has yet to accomplish.
For now Tigers infidelity will play a huge role in how he is perceived on a personal basis, but on the golf course like it or not he is still the worlds greatest.

Fellow Golfer Angry about Tiger’s Infidelity
Golfer Jesper Parnevik has not spoken to Tiger Woods since it was exposed that he cheated on his wife. Tiger’s wife Eli was once the nanny for Parnevik’s children. He told the press, “I would probably need to apologize to her and hope she uses a driver next time instead of a 3-iron".

Baxter Announces She’s Lesbian
Meredith Baxter came out of the closet the other day and told the world she is lesbian. Her good friend and costar from Family Ties Michael Gross is thrilled. He claimed that people are always asking him and his wife if Meredith has a man yet and now they no longer need to hide Meredith’s orientation. Meredith was not necessarily hiding the fact that she’s been with long time girl friend Nancy Locke. She wasn’t announcing it either. Gross said, "When we go out together, she travels with her partner. I've seen [them] hold hands in public. She's never made an issue of hiding it. I think in some ways, Meredith is more comfortable with this because who wants to live as someone other than yourself?"
No Porter House Steak for Portman
Natalie Portman is featured in the new edition of Marie Claire magazine. She told reporters in the interview that she has lived a fairly sheltered life even after becoming a young Hollywood actress. Portman explained that she has tried marijuana and has been drunk before but admits she did not dabble with the substances until she was in her twenties. The Harvard grad was a vegetarian for twenty years but has become vegan since she started spending more time with Tobey Maguire on the set of the new movie Brothers. Maguire brought a vegan chef to the set and Portman took a liking to falafel and the other vegan dishes the chef provided. She believes that what you eat mirrors your beliefs to others and that eating animals is wrong and is a cause of many illnesses including asthma and the animal waste dumped into rivers from farms raising massive amounts of animals pollutes rivers and their fish.
Lambert Penalized for AMA’s
It seems that Adam Lambert’s smooch with his keyboard player lit a match under ABC’s derriere. Two of his appearances on Kimmel and NYE have been cancelled due to what Lambert describes as “heat from the FCC”. I’m sorry people, but have you ever watched a Lifetime movie on national television? Things get a lot steamier than a kiss between two people. And how many times have we watched prime time programs on local channels like ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox that include at least partial nudity and racy content? It makes you wonder what the real issue is here.
Grammy Awards Nominees
Beyonce is in the lead for the most nominations followed by The Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga. Other groups in the running for album-of-the-year are Kings of Leon and Dave Matthews Band. Quincy Jones held the most Grammy nominations of all time at 79! Brian McKnight who was nominated 16 times has the most nominations without a win. U2 won the most Grammy Awards for a group with a total of 22. The female and male artists with the most Grammy wins are Stevie Wonder at 25 and Allison Krauss at 26!

What a Tiger!
What is going on with golf star Tiger Woods and his entourage of mistresses? When the news first broke about his little SUV accident outside of his own house, reporters tried to tell us that his wife was attempting to pry him free of his crashed vehicle with a golf club. I think she was trying to whack him with it and who could blame her? Evidently Tiger has been having a little fun on the side. The $164 he was forced to pay from the accident is nothing compared to what he is about to go through.
The tabloids are accusing Tiger of having more than one girlfriend and the two that have come forward were supposedly paid $100,000 and $150,000 to tell their story. Rachel Uchitel, a club hostess in Manhattan is denying one tabloid’s claim that she is involved with Tiger. She wrote this on her Facebook account: "There is NO relationship with tiger. These girls quoted in the story are not being truthful. I resent my name being slung thru the mud." A woman named Ashley Samson tattled the story to the National Inquirer telling them that Uchitel is her coworker and friend. Uchitel denies knowing Samson, though the Inquirer has photos of the two hanging out in Spain. Another woman named Jaimee Grubbs has told the reporters that she’s been sleeping with Tiger since April 2007.
Is it all hearsay? Are all these ladies out for the money or are their hearts actually on the line? Tiger’s lawyer claims that nothing happened between Tiger and Uchitel but admits that the two did meet at a club. Uchitel admits that she flew to Australia last month at the same time that Tiger was there but claims it was “a coincidence”.
Grubbs released a voicemail that was allegedly left by Tiger. He told her, "Hey, it's Tiger. I need you to do me a huge favor. Can you please take your name off your phone? My wife went through my phone and may be calling you. So if you can, please take your name off that. Just have it as a number ... on the voicemail. You gotta do this for me. Huge. Quickly. Bye." The voicemail was played this morning on radio stations everywhere and many agree that it certainly sounds like Tiger.
Tiger is frustrated with the speculation of the media and the accusations that have been exposed to the public. He said, "Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn't have to mean public confessions." He also said, "I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart”. One needs to question what the "transgressions" truly are. Things are looking quite dismal for America's favorite professional golfer right now. Though his image is tarnished, there has been no word of any of Tiger’s sponsors bailing out just yet.

Golf and Rugby to be added to the 2016 Olympics
Even though Golf and Rugby or major international sports that are regularly seen on ESPN they have not been part of the Olympics for a while. But that all changed when the Olympic board approved both of the sports to return to competition for the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro.
The board approved golf with a vote of 63-27, and Rugby by huge 81-8 margin. In order to get the sports approved many of the top players in each sport spoke to the panel about how adding their sport would benefit both the Olympics and people worldwide. Even Tiger Woods sent in a recorded video to the panel saying he would love to compete if golf was approved.
With the go ahead approval golf will have 60 men and women competing in a 72 hole competition with the winner take the gold. Rugby will change its format a little from 15 a side to just 7, and will have 12 men and woman teams competing.

Tiger Earns Timely Win At The Bridgestone Invitational
Tiger Woods lofted a 180 yard eight iron to within a foot on the 16th hole while the leader, Padraig Harrington, suffered a complete meltdown with a triple bogey putting an end to the anticipated drama between these two golf heavyweights, to win the World Golf Championship at the Bridgestone International on Sunday on NBC on Satellite TV.
The tournament, however, did not conclude without some drama, or rather, controversy.
Earlier in the final round, one of the PGA officials had advised both Woods and Harrington that they were 'on the clock', meaning that they would need to speed up their play. Even though they were the last group on the course, they are still required to maintain a certain speed, but they had fallen behind by about 17 minutes just before reaching the 16th tee. Then, on the 16th hole, disaster struck. Perhaps, this caused Harrington to rush his shots because an offical could invoke a $5000. fine, small change for these players, or worse, a one stroke penalty for continued slow play after a warning. Now, that would be costly!
Both golfers hit their tee shots into the rough on the right side of the fairway on the hole named 'The Monster', by Arnold Palmer. Woods punched a shot onto the faiway where he then knocked the now famous eight iron over the water to within inches of the hole for an easy birdie, but Harrington pulled his second shot short of the trap, and then skied a shot over the green into thick rough. Now, possibly trying to hurry his shots, he hit a flyer for his fourth than ran past the cup and into the lake at the front of the green. Now, taking a drop back down the fairway, he lofted another approach shot over the green, chipped on, and one-putted for a triple bogey eight. This ended his hopes for the championship with only two holes to play, against Tiger Woods who was now 3-up.
Woods was perturbed that he and Harrington were both put on the clock at the pivotal 16th hole, and suggested publicly that Harrington was rushed into three poor shots that led to the triple bogey. Up until that point, they were neck and neck, and everyone expected a compelling duel to the end, but it actually resulted in another inevitable Woods victory.
On one hand, Tiger really stepped out of character in blaming the rules official for the anticlimactic finish. At first, there was some talk of the PGA Tour even fining Woods for making comments to the new media that "unreasonable attack or disparage tournaments, sponsors, fellow members, players, or the PGA Tour." This report was said to be erroneous.
Tour officials defended the decision to put them on the clock as simply enforcing a policy that all players are expected to follow.
There were arguments on both sides. Rules are rules, and strangely, even Harrington himself out that it would be unfair for the final two players, no matter what was at stake or whatever the conditions, to be treated differently than all the groups ahead of them. "I'll probably be a better player because of this," said Harrington. "So, that's a good thing. You learn from these things."
Is pairing with Tiger a good thing
It was another moment for Tiger Woods that will be shown over and over on ESPN, or even the Golf Channel. With the lead going into the final round of the Bridgestone Invitational Padraig Harrington was paired with Tiger Woods who just shot a 65 the night before to get within 3 stokes off the lead going into the final day. For most golfers going into the final round with the lead is good as long as you keep your composer. But going to final round paired up with Tiger Woods is asking for failure.
Harrington played as well as anyone until the pressure got to him at the 16th hole. Going into the 16th Harrington had a one shot lead on Woods. Both golfers fell into trouble after their first shot and that’s when the momentum shifted. Tiger used an 8 iron to put his ball 1 ft away from the hole to give him a birdie and a chance at the lead. Harrington on the other hand hit the ball well to place him about 26ft away from the hole, but an awkward shot after landed him in the water and he began his fall from grace.
Woods finished with the victory and has won 7 of the 10 times he’s played at the course. The win gives woods his 70th victory overall and puts him one step closer to being the greatest of all time. While what Tiger did would seem amazing, but he does it so many times its kind of expected from him. Many of golfers know going into the final round with the lead you’re not safe. It does not matter how far back Tiger is he still has a chance of catching you, and being paired with him is nightmare if you have the lead.
If you look at the numbers for tournaments and winnings what Tiger does is amazing. He is on top of the money list for total earnings at $5,478,163.00 he has played in twelve tournaments made the cut ten times, placed in the top ten nine times, and has four wins. So if you ever wonder why Tiger is always predicted to win its because of all active golfers tiger wins more than 28% of the tournaments he has played in. The only person close to him is Phil Mickelson at 9%.

Golf ~ Why I Love This Sport
I love this sport because its competitors are taught honesty and respect at an early age.
I love this sport because I can be outside and enjoy the smell of cut grass without having to mow the lawn.
I love this sport because even after a day of horrible play, one good shot will always bring you back for more.
I love this sport because the girls can beat the boys. You go girl.
I love this sport because the next shot that you hit might be the best shot of your life.
I love this sport because two 40-somethings can play with a 12 year-old and a 77 year-old…and get beat by both.
I love this sport because a girl can still dress like a girl while bombing a 300-yard drive.
I love this sport because watching Golf in HD is almost as good as, well, let's not go there.
I love this sport because a 59 year-old golfing legend can come within one-stroke of winning a Major Championship and making history while beating the young guns. Good for you Tom Watson.
I love this sport because Tiger Woods has provided more “hair-on-the-back-of-your-neck-is-standing-up” moments than I could ever count. His chip-in on the 16th hole at the 2005 Masters is the most exciting golf shot I’ve ever seen (if not the most exciting play in sports, period). It still gives me chills every time I see it. If you haven’t seen it, watch it here. I can’t wait for the next one; and there will be a next one.

Watson Beats the Odds and his Age
When the Royal & Ancient first decided to lower the age limit to 60 for winners of golf's oldest chamionship, they couldn't have forseen the performance that a 59 year old, 5 time former winner, Tom Watson, could put on to be in a position to lead the tournament in the final days and come within an 8 foot putt of winning.
Prior to the British Open, more people should have noticed how reverently Watson had spoken about his affection for Turnberry where he had won 32 years earlier in the 'Duel in the Sun' against Jack Nicklaus. He explained why he is able to compete on links courses that require shots to be struck pure, and not necessarily with tremendous power.
Watson ended up beating everybody but one guy in the field. All of this played out as we watched the open on Direct Tv's TNT channel# 245 for the first two days and on NBC for the final two days.
Other, younger, former champions didn't fare as well, either. Tiger Woods didn't even make the cut on Friday, and the defending champion, Padraig Harrington, never really challanged the leaders, finishing 14 shots off the pace. Stuart Cink was too young to remember Watson's victory at Turnberry in '77, although he played a practice round with him at this year's Masters, and was impressed by how cleanly Watson hit the ball. Playing against him when it counted was even more impressive.
The sign on the yellow scoreboard still hadn't come down as of yesterday, a somber reminder of who didn't win the British Open, as it read, "Well played Stewart. See you at St. Andrews in 2010." Maybe, Tom Watson will go to St. Andrews next year for a farewell party. Or maybe, he'll go there and put on another spectacular show for the ages.
